America Has Been a Christian Nation Since Its Founding

America celebrates its 246th birthday today! This country is the greatest and most unique nation in the world for many reasons. Military dominance, cultural influence, and economic prowess are just a few reasons, but perhaps the greatest and most unique reason would be who founded our nation and the Christian principles they built it on. Our nation and government were founded by great men of courage, intellect, and outspoken faith, although most secular scholars would like to overlook their faith. The strong words of Thomas Paine and a few letters from Benjamin Franklin are highlighted by seculars as evidence to show how anti-religious the founding fathers were. But that is simply not true. A significant majority of our Founding Fathers were men of Christian faith. Here are a few quotes from three men who signed the Declaration of Independence that reveal their deep faith:

· Richard Stockton: “I subscribe to the entire belief of the great and leading doctrines of the Christian religion, such as the being of God, the universal defection and depravity of human nature, the Divinity of the person, and the completeness of the redemption purchased by the blessed Savior.”

· Charles Caroll: “I rely for salvation and on His merits, not on the works I have done in obedience to His precepts.”

· Samuel Adams : “I rely upon the merits of Jesus Christ for a pardon of all my sins.”

After Richard Henry Lee, a signer of the Declaration of Independence and framer of the Bill of Rights died in 1794, his grandson went on a mission. He gathered personal letters, diaries, and other documents from various founding fathers and compiled everything into a multi-volume book. This is what he concluded: “The wise and great men of those days were not ashamed publicly to confess the name of our blessed Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! In behalf of the people, as their representatives and rulers, they acknowledged the sublime doctrine of His meditation.”

People in the founding fathers' generation knew where the founding fathers stood on their faith. Sadly, people have lost that understanding over the decades. Since its founding, America has been a Christian nation!
